18 year old girl who transitioned to boy and de-transitioned back to girl is suing her doctors and hospital for ‘misleading’ her

Kayla Lovdahl, an 18-year-old from California, has recently filed a lawsuit against Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and four individual doctors, alleging that they rushed her through gender treatment and failed to provide adequate psychological screening. According to the lawsuit, Kayla, who was assigned female at birth, identified as a boy at the age of 11 after learning about the transgender community online.

At the age of 12, Kayla claims she was prescribed puberty blockers and testosterone without sufficient psychological evaluation. The doctors involved allegedly told her parents, “It’s better to have a live son than a dead daughter.” This statement, along with the lack of comprehensive assessment, raises concerns about the medical professionals’ approach.

By the age of 13, Kayla underwent a double mastectomy to masculinize her chest. However, at 17, she began to realize that transitioning had been a mistake, and she felt that the professionals involved had failed to protect her, considering her young age and vulnerability.

In a YouTube interview, Kayla expressed her regret, stating, “The hardest part was being sold something that I believed was going to help me and make me feel better, only to do it and come out on the other side not feeling any better. I could always have waited, but I can’t undo it.”

Kayla’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, claiming that the doctors and hospital breached the standard of care expected of medical professionals by allowing her to transition at such a young age without proper evaluation and consideration of alternative treatments. Her attorney, Mark E. Trammell, argues that the doctors essentially handed Kayla a prescription pad without adequately addressing her emotional and psychological needs.

The 35-page lawsuit describes the situation as a damaging “imitation sex change experiment” performed on a vulnerable 12-year-old girl struggling with complex mental health issues. It suggests that instead of rushing into medical interventions, Kayla needed comprehensive care, attention, and psychotherapy.

The suit highlights a single 75-minute transition evaluation conducted by clinical psychologist Watson, who is also the clinical director of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals’ “Transgender Clinic” at the Oakland Medical Center. This brief evaluation is seen as insufficient for making such life-altering decisions.

In response to the lawsuit, a representative for Kaiser Permanente stated that when adolescent patients seek gender-affirming care with parental consent, the patient’s care team evaluates treatment options carefully. They also mention the availability of a multidisciplinary team of physicians and professionals to provide information, counseling, and support to the patient and their family. The statement emphasizes that care decisions ultimately rest with the patient and their parents or guardians, respecting their right to make informed choices about personal health.

Kayla’s case raises important questions about the standards of care, the role of psychological evaluation in gender treatment, and the need to ensure the well-being and protection of young individuals navigating complex gender identity issues.
