Coup Attempt In Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso, the junta that had seized power following a military regime has announced the thwarting of a recent coup attempt. The junta, which came into power after overthrowing the previous military regime, revealed that certain army officers had made an attempt to seize power and destabilize the nation.

In an official statement, the junta expressed their concern over the intention to attack the country’s institutions and push it into chaos. They emphasized their commitment to uncovering the instigators behind this plot through thorough investigations.

Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo, the spokesperson for the regime, announced the arrest of officers and individuals allegedly involved in the attempt to destabilize the government. The military government also pledged to shed light on the entire plot, regretting the involvement of officers who had sworn to defend their homeland.

According to the junta, four individuals have been detained, while efforts are underway to apprehend two others who are currently on the run. They highlighted the seriousness of the situation, acknowledging credible allegations of a plot against state security involving officers.

The regime expressed deep regret that those tasked with defending the nation had deviated from their sworn duties, engaging in actions aimed at hindering the progress of the Burkinabe people towards sovereignty and liberation from terrorist threats.

This coup attempt comes after a series of coups that have taken place across Africa since 2020, reflecting the prevailing instability and security challenges faced by the continent. The situation in Burkina Faso has been exacerbated by insurgencies carried out by armed groups affiliated with al Qaeda and Islamic State, further destabilizing the country and its neighboring regions. Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the junta leader, had seized power on September 30, 2022, marking the second coup in Burkina Faso within eight months.
