‘Delirious’ woman killed elderly patient in hospital ward in front of nurses
A tragic and horrifying incident unfolded at Birmingham City Hospital, resulting in the death of an elderly patient and the subsequent imprisonment of Philomena Wilson, aged 56. In January 2021, Wilson, who was also a patient at the hospital, carried out a brutal attack on 83-year-old grandmother Vidya Kaur.
Investigations revealed that Wilson was suffering from a temporary delirium, likely induced by her substance abuse issues, at the time of the assault. Mrs. Kaur sustained severe head injuries, including a fractured skull, which ultimately led to her passing away three weeks later.
Initially claiming no recollection of the events, Wilson later pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. During the trial at Birmingham Crown Court, it was revealed that in the early hours of the morning, a nurse was assisting an elderly patient to the toilet when Wilson, who was on the same ward, emerged from her bed and launched the unprovoked attack.
Wilson aggressively pushed the nurse away and caused Mrs. Kaur to fall face-first onto the floor. She then proceeded to repeatedly bash Mrs. Kaur’s head on the floor, while also assaulting another patient and a healthcare assistant who tried to intervene. Security guards eventually subdued Wilson and returned her to her bed.

Forensic experts unanimously agreed that Wilson was experiencing an acute mental disorder at the time of the offense. However, it was established that she was aware of her actions despite her mental state. She intentionally targeted both the nurse and Mrs. Kaur, who offered no resistance. Even when restrained, Wilson persisted in her violent assault on Mrs. Kaur.
During the sentencing, Judge Melbourne Inman KC expressed the gravity of the crime and the vulnerability of the victim. He stated that Mrs. Kaur was receiving treatment at the hospital when Wilson attacked her, emphasizing her advanced age, frailty, slight build, and overall poor health. The judge asserted that the attack was a vicious act perpetrated against a defenseless woman.
Consequently, Wilson was sentenced to seven years in prison, with an additional five years on license. Judge Inman concluded that Wilson’s intention at the time of the attack was to kill. In her defense, Michelle Heeley KC argued that Wilson deeply regrets her actions, emphasizing her severe mental instability during the incident. Heeley contended that Wilson did not realize she was mentally unwell and that her intention was to cause serious harm rather than to kill.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from a momentary lapse of sanity and the need for robust mental health support and intervention within healthcare settings. It also underscores the importance of protecting the vulnerable individuals entrusted to the care of medical facilities.
