First Class graduate commits sui,,cide after failing to secure employment

A deep sense of sorrow has engulfed the Kapsongoro village in Chepsangor, Nandi County, Kenya, as a family mourns the tragic loss of their son who allegedly took his own life due to the anguish of being unable to secure employment.

The deceased, Michael Kibet, was a promising graduate from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) who tragically ended his life at his brother’s residence in Lessos. Despite his academic accomplishments, including graduating with First Class honors in ICT and Telecommunication from the renowned institution in 2021, and achieving an impressive A plain from Meteitei Boys High School in Tinderet Nandi, Kibet’s relentless pursuit of job opportunities bore no fruit.

Area Chief David Rugut, expressing his condolences, confirmed the heartbreaking incident on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, disclosing that Kibet took his own life in a fit of despair, hanging himself outside his brother’s house. The community of Chepsangor mourns not only the loss of a bright and promising individual but also a dependable professional whose potential would have greatly benefitted the locality.

Reflecting on the devastating turn of events, Chief Rugut remarked, “We are really saddened by the loss of Michael. He was a hardworking and disciplined boy in our location. He ended his life out of frustration according to his brother.” The news of Kibet’s demise sent shockwaves through the community, as he was known for his humility and responsible nature, leaving many in disbelief.

Prior to his untimely death, Kibet harbored high hopes of securing employment immediately after completing his studies, buoyed by his remarkable academic achievements and ranking at the top of his class. The locals, shaken by his sudden demise, struggled to comprehend the tragedy, as Kibet had always been regarded as a diligent young man with a strong sense of responsibility.

At the time of his passing, Kibet resided with his mother, a retired nurse and single mother who had single-handedly supported her children’s education following the demise of her husband. Chief Rugut expressed the difficulty in pinpointing the exact factors that may have contributed to Kibet’s tragic decision, given the solid educational foundation provided by his parents. The loss of such a vibrant and talented young man is a profound tragedy that the community deeply mourns.

As funeral preparations are underway, the body of the deceased has been transferred to Samaritan Funeral Home in Kapsabet. The final rites will take place on Friday, June 9, 2023. Regrettably, suicide cases have been on the rise in the country, with experts attributing stress and depression as contributing factors to this distressing trend.

A grieving relative, speaking anonymously, revealed, “We didn’t know he was going through issues. Whenever he was facing a problem, he would tell us.” This revelation highlights the challenges of recognizing the internal struggles individuals may face, underscoring the importance of open dialogue and support systems for mental health.

The loss of Michael Kibet serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need to address the underlying causes of distress, ensuring that individuals have access to proper mental health support and avenues for seeking help. It is a collective responsibility to create a society that fosters understanding, compassion, and opportunities for all, so that no individual feels compelled to take such a tragic step.
