France has quieter night after Nahel M’s grandmother calls for riots to stop
On Sunday, there was a significant decrease in the number of people arrested in France, thanks to the intervention of the grandmother of a teenager who was tragically shot by a police officer. The incident had sparked widespread riots across the country, which had been ongoing since Tuesday morning when 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk was killed.
In response to the escalating violence, a staggering 45,000 police officers had been deployed in major cities like Paris. Curfews were implemented, and the subway system had been forced to close early to maintain public safety.
However, hope emerged when Nahel’s grandmother, Nadia, made a heartfelt plea for peace during an interview with French news channel BFM. She expressed her desire for the violence to cease, urging those who were causing destruction to reconsider their actions. She specifically appealed to them to spare schools and buses from any further harm.
Nadia, overwhelmed by the devastating impact the past week had had on her family, expressed her exhaustion and declared that enough was enough. The toll on her daughter, Nahel’s mother, had been particularly severe, as her life had been forever altered.
Remarkably, Nadia’s impassioned plea seemed to have the desired effect, as the number of arrests related to the riots on Sunday dropped significantly. Only 78 arrests were made across France that day, in stark contrast to the 719 arrests on Saturday and the staggering 1,300 on Friday.

Despite the positive development, the large deployment of police officers continued due to a separate incident. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the home of Vincent Jeanbrun, the mayor of L’Hay-les-Roses, was attacked. Mr. Jeanbrun described it as an “assassination attempt,” revealing that his wife and one of his two children had been injured when a burning car was driven into their house.
While skirmishes did occur in Marseille, a city on the Mediterranean, on Sunday, they appeared to be less intense than the previous night, according to the interior ministry’s observations.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, President Emmanuel Macron convened a special security meeting on Sunday as the protests entered their sixth day. An official from the meeting disclosed that Macron intended to meet with the leaders of both houses of parliament, followed by discussions with mayors representing the 220 towns and cities affected by the unrest. The President also expressed his intention to initiate a thorough and comprehensive assessment of the underlying causes that contributed to the outbreak of violence. This unrest had brought to light long-standing discontent prevalent in low-income neighborhoods.
As a result of the ongoing violence, Macron was compelled to delay the commencement of the first state visit to Germany in 23 years, underscoring the urgency and severity of the situation.
