How two Saudi sisters ‘died in a suicide pact’ in their Australian apartment after they were cut off from their father’s money

two Saudi Arabian sisters, Asra Abdullah Alsehli (24) and Amaal Abdullah Alsehli (23), were found dead inside their Sydney unit on June 7, 2022. The sisters had fled their homeland five years prior, arriving in Australia with only $5,000 in savings. It is believed that the tragic incident was a result of a suspected suicide pact, allegedly prompted by their estrangement from their family.

According to the New South Wales (NSW) Police, Asra and Amaal had remained inside their Canterbury unit from late February until their untimely demise in early April. It was during this period that they stopped receiving financial support from their family, resulting in a complete cut-off of communication. Reports suggest that a significant stream of monetary assistance abruptly ceased in February, indicating a potential fallout between the sisters and their overseas family.

Toxicology reports conducted after their deaths revealed unusual levels of sodium, nitrate, and fluoride in the apartment, although they were inconclusive in determining the exact cause of death. Despite this, the police reportedly hold a strong belief that the sisters died as a result of a suicide pact. Their case is currently being investigated, and the details have been submitted in a police report to the coroner.

Financially, the sisters relied on their family’s support, which abruptly ended in February 2022. Their last payment, amounting to over $4,400, was received on February 3. Amaal, who managed the funds, allocated $960 for their fortnightly rent and transferred $2,000 to her sister. The sisters also owned a black BMW coupe, suggesting a certain level of affluence.

Their rental agent, Jay Hu, disclosed that the sisters were initially considered good tenants when they moved in two years prior. They had provided evidence of ample savings at the time. However, they fell behind on rent in early 2022, and their financial situation deteriorated thereafter.

Michael Baird, the building manager, became concerned about the sisters’ well-being and requested a welfare check by the police. When officers arrived and approached their door, the sisters refused to unlock it. After a brief conversation, where the sisters assured the police that they were okay and did not require any assistance, the officers left. Unfortunately, this welfare check did not uncover the gravity of their situation.

Throughout this period, the sisters’ relationship with their well-connected family reportedly soured. They remained isolated inside their apartment, with minimal contact even with their father. The only subsequent communication occurred during a visit from a NSW Sheriff, who informed them of their impending eviction due to rent arrears amounting to approximately $5,000.

Concerns continued to mount as mail piled up outside their door, prompting three more welfare checks by the police. Tragically, it was not until June, when the sheriff’s office returned to carry out the eviction, that the lifeless bodies of the two sisters were discovered in separate bedrooms of their first-floor unit. There was no evidence to support their claim that they were being followed by a private investigator, as they had confided in some friends.

Sources familiar with the investigation believe that the sisters were well aware of the dangers they would face if they returned to Saudi Arabia, prompting them to make the tragic decision to take their own lives. The combination of chemicals found in their bodies could no longer be detected two months after their deaths, further supporting the theory of a suicide pact. The absence of traces of chemicals or signs of anyone else entering the unit led investigators to this heartbreaking conclusion.
