Husband and wife die in hot air balloon crash, daughter hospitalised

On April 1, tragedy struck a family of three as they embarked on a hot air balloon ride over the pre-Hispanic ruin site of Teotihuacan, a popular tourist destination in Mexico City. Jose Nolasco, 50, and his wife Viridiana Becerril, 38, had taken their daughter Regina Itzani, on the joyride, which ultimately ended in disaster.

The family had posed for a final family photo in front of the hot air balloon before boarding. However, just moments after takeoff, the balloon caught fire and began to plummet to the ground. Video footage captured by onlookers showed the balloon descending rapidly as it burst into flames, with occupants appearing to either fall or jump from the craft.

Mexican authorities have confirmed that the accident claimed the lives of the husband and wife, while their daughter Regina Itzani was injured but expected to survive. Itzani had broken her arm when she jumped from the fiery gondola, and also suffered second-degree burns.
