Lagos moves two spots up, now fourth worst city to live in the world
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria, has been listed as the fourth worst city to live in the world. The EIU, an agency under The Economist of London, released its 2023 Global Liveability report, which ranked cities based on various factors such as stability, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and cultural opportunities.
The top positions in the list were dominated by Vienna, the capital of Austria, and Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, which retained their first and second rankings respectively. These cities were praised for their exceptional combination of stability, well-developed infrastructure, robust education and healthcare services, and abundant cultural and entertainment offerings.
Melbourne and Sydney, cities in Australia, secured the third and fourth positions respectively, while Vancouver in Canada claimed the fifth spot in the rankings. These cities were recognized for their high quality of life and overall livability.

Lagos, on the other hand, witnessed a slight improvement in its ranking compared to the previous year. In the 2022 report, it held the second-worst position, but in the 2023 report, it moved up two spots. However, despite this progress, Lagos still faces significant challenges. The EIU acknowledged that improvements in healthcare and education contributed to its upward movement in the rankings. Nevertheless, corruption remains a persistent problem that hampers the city’s progress.
The report highlighted that even cities at the bottom of the rankings, such as Lagos and Algiers (the capital of Algeria), have made some strides forward. These improvements were partially attributed to the countries’ status as energy exporters, benefiting from higher global oil and gas prices. While corruption continues to pose challenges, there has been some additional public funding allocated to infrastructure and public services. Additionally, the decline in COVID-19 cases has provided a temporary respite and allowed for better resource allocation to critical areas.
While Lagos’ improved ranking is a positive development, it underscores the ongoing work needed to address issues such as corruption and further enhance the city’s livability. As Nigeria’s economic hub, Lagos plays a crucial role in the country’s development, and efforts to combat corruption and invest in infrastructure and public services will be vital in creating a more livable and prosperous environment for its residents.
