Man, 23, sentenced to life imprisonment for r****g 84-year-old woman in South Africa
a 23-year-old man named Jackson Manamela has been sentenced to life imprisonment for committing a heinous crime against an 84-year-old woman. The Mahwelereng Regional Court in Pretoria delivered its judgment on Tuesday, June 21, 2023, after convicting Manamela on charges of robbery and rape.
The horrifying incident took place in May 2022 when Manamela, who was already out on bail for a previous offense, approached the elderly woman while she was cooking outside her shack in Millennium village, located under the Mahwelereng policing precinct, just outside Mokopane. According to the police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Manamela launched a sudden and brutal attack on the vulnerable victim, stabbing her on the forehead with a pair of scissors. He then forcibly dragged her into the shack, where he proceeded to rob her of R70 in cash and her social grant card, a lifeline for many elderly citizens in South Africa.
As if the robbery wasn’t enough, Manamela subjected the defenseless woman to a horrifying act of rape before fleeing the scene. The traumatized victim managed to gather her strength and courageously sought help from her neighbors, informing them about the harrowing ordeal she had endured. The neighbors wasted no time in contacting the police, who swiftly responded to the distress call. The victim’s statements led to the immediate opening of cases for robbery and rape, and within just three days, on May 12, 2022, Jackson Manamela was apprehended by the authorities.

The gravity of the situation prompted the case to be transferred to the Mokopane Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for further investigation. Sergeant Ramokone Tinah Matsimbi was assigned to meticulously probe the matter, showcasing her dedication and commitment to seeking justice for the victim. It was during the course of these investigations that the startling revelation emerged that Manamela had been out on bail for another crime committed against the same 84-year-old victim. On December 2, 2019, he had been involved in a housebreaking incident with the intent to steal and commit robbery at her residence.
Thanks to Sergeant Matsimbi’s unwavering efforts, Manamela was denied bail, ensuring that he remained in custody throughout the legal proceedings. The court recognized her remarkable work and commitment to the case. Combining the two cases, the court found Jackson Manamela guilty on multiple counts, including robbery, rape, and housebreaking with the intent to rob and commit robbery.
The sentencing delivered by the court aimed to bring justice to the victim and serve as a deterrent to such heinous acts. Manamela was sentenced to three years imprisonment for robbery, life imprisonment for rape, and an additional 15 years imprisonment for the housebreaking offense. These sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve them simultaneously. Furthermore, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm, recognizing the danger he poses to society.
While this case highlights the horrifying reality of violence against vulnerable individuals, it also showcases the dedication and tireless efforts of law enforcement officers like Sergeant Ramokone Tinah Matsimbi. It is through their unwavering commitment that justice is served, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their despicable actions and that victims receive the support and closure they deserve.
