Multi-Storey Building Collapses In Garki, Abuja. 2 Persons Dead, 37 Injured

A tragic incident occurred in Abuja, where a multi-storey building located on Lagos Street in Garki collapsed. The collapse resulted in a devastating loss of life and many individuals being trapped under the debris. According to reports, around 37 people lost their lives in the incident, with two others suffering fatal injuries.

The Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) confirmed the occurrence and reported that they had successfully rescued 37 individuals from the rubble. These survivors were transported to various medical facilities in Abuja for treatment. FEMA also stated that search and rescue efforts were still ongoing in collaboration with other rescue agencies.

The Director General of FEMA, Dr. Abbass Idriss, noted that the rescue team was awaiting excavators to intensify the search and ensure that no victim remained trapped within the collapsed building. Various emergency response agencies, including the FCT Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, FCT Police Command, and the Vehicle Inspection Office, joined forces to carry out the rescue operations.

An eyewitness at the scene revealed that the building contained multiple apartments and shops on the ground floor. The collapse occurred during heavy rainfall that began around 11 pm on the night of the incident. The eyewitness described the scene as one of chaos and helplessness, with people screaming and trying to assist amidst the heavy rain.

As of the time of the report, emergency agency officials had not yet arrived at the scene, indicating the immediate need for their intervention to aid in rescue efforts and provide assistance to the affected individuals and families.
