NFF Approves New Name For The Nigerian League

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially approved the change of name for the country’s top football league. The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will now be known as the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), following the decision made during the 79th general assembly of the NFF in Uyo on September 10, 2023.

This change in name was originally initiated by the new NPFL board ahead of the 2023-2024 season, along with the unveiling of a new league logo. However, the NFF had not given its prior approval for these changes, prompting a warning to the board that only the football governing body possesses the authority to sanction such modifications. Consequently, the issue was presented and discussed during the general assembly meeting.

In the communique released after the meeting, the NFF officially announced, “The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League.”

The 2023-2024 NPFL season was initially set to kick off with a match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan. However, the commencement of the new season was postponed just three days before kickoff, citing sponsorship-related requirements as the reason. A new start date for the season will be announced in due course.

Enyimba Football Club of Aba is the current reigning champion of the league. They will have ample opportunity to defend their title this season since they have been eliminated from the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League.
