Police hunt for 5 year old girl who was bundled into suitcase and kidnapped from hotel
A desperate search is underway in Italy for five-year-old Kataleya Mia Chicillo Alvarez, a young girl from Peru who was allegedly abducted from a hotel in Florence nearly two weeks ago. The former Astor Hotel had become a temporary residence for approximately 140 migrants, including Kataleya and her family, who had been squatting there since September of the previous year.
CCTV footage from June 10 captured the last known moments of Kataleya before her disappearance. The footage showed her playing on some steps in the hotel’s courtyard at around 3:12 p.m. Suddenly, she vanished without a trace. Authorities suspect that she may have been forcibly placed inside a trunk or suitcase and taken out of the hotel through one of its two exits.
In response to the disappearance, the police evacuated the hotel, as the occupants were residing there illegally. They meticulously searched the premises for any evidence related to Kataleya’s abduction. Additionally, law enforcement officers expanded their search to include a nearby building and a garage, suspecting that the young girl might have been temporarily relocated there. In a desperate attempt to find any leads, police even scoured incinerators and refuse dumps, hoping to discover any clues or potential signs of foul play.
Kataleya’s parents, Kathrina Alvarez and Miguel Angel Romero, attended a church service near the hotel on Sunday, June 18, to seek solace and pray for the safe return of their daughter. Miguel had recently been released from prison, where he served time for theft and credit card fraud. As a condition of his release, he must regularly visit the local police station twice a week.

The distressing situation has deeply affected the community, prompting Cardinal Giuseppe Betori to call upon people to pray for the safe return of Kataleya. The local parish, led by Father Juan Manuel Núñez Rubio, chaplain of the Latin American community in Florence, shared the cardinal’s request and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from both the Peruvian community and the wider Florentine community. They acknowledged the collective efforts of those who had joined the search and emphasized the sorrow that Kataleya’s disappearance has caused.
Meanwhile, Kathrina, Kataleya’s mother, experienced further hardship when she ingested bleach and was subsequently hospitalized. After being discharged on Wednesday, she shared her determination to remain strong and unwavering in her pursuit to find her daughter. Kathrina vowed to never give up and expressed her renewed strength and hope.
