Purina Petcare has made the decision to recall its Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets El Elemental Dry Dog Food in the United States.
The FDA has issued a recall for Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL), a specialty dog food designed for pets with food sensitivities. The recall affects select lots of the dry dog food, which was distributed through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and select retailers that can validate a prescription. The recall was prompted by two cases of dogs experiencing symptoms of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the food. The food may contain elevated levels of vitamin D, which is essential for dogs but can lead to health issues such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling, and potentially renal dysfunction if ingested in high doses.
According usatodayThe vitamin is generally beneficial for dogs, according to the FDA, but too much of it leads to Vitamin D toxicity, which might include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to kidney dysfunction.
The recalled dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription.
