South African man hired by a mother to kill her daughter for insurance payout sentenced to life imprisonment

A 34-year-old man named Ngoako Japhter Mabetlela has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Limpopo Polokwane High Court in South Africa. His crime? The murder of a young woman named Lebogang Prudence Lediga, orchestrated at the request of her own mother, who sought financial gain from an insurance payout. The court proceedings revealed chilling details of the heinous act.

On the fateful evening of May 28, 2020, the accused made his way to the deceased’s residence and proceeded to strangle her to death. Shockingly, after committing the gruesome crime, the deceased’s mother took it upon herself to wash her daughter’s body and change her clothes before the police could arrive. This disturbing act only added to the horror of the situation.

The motive behind this tragic event was uncovered during the trial. The deceased’s mother had requested that Mabetlela kill her daughter in exchange for a financial reward. She was motivated by the prospect of an insurance payout. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, highlighted this chilling aspect of the case in a statement.

During the sentencing phase, the state prosecutor, Adv. Malebo Maleka, presented aggravating factors to support a severe punishment. It was revealed that the deceased suffered a painful death, and the crime had been premeditated. Furthermore, Maleka argued that Mabetlela had the opportunity to report the deceased’s mother to the police but chose not to do so due to his own vested interest in the expected payment.

The state prosecutor firmly stated that there were no substantial or compelling circumstances that warranted deviating from the prescribed minimum sentence. The NPA expressed satisfaction with the diligent work conducted by Adv. Maleka and the investigating officer, Sergeant Lekgema Joseph Molepo of Mankweng police station. Their dedication to pursuing justice ensured that the perpetrators of this horrific crime faced appropriate legal consequences.

It is worth noting that the deceased’s mother had already pleaded guilty and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. Her admission of guilt took place last year, shedding light on the sinister collaboration that led to the loss of her own daughter’s life. The court’s judgment against Mabetlela, imposing a life sentence, signifies the severity of the crime committed and serves as a reminder that justice will be served for such heinous acts in South Africa.
