South African rapper AKA to be buried on February 18

The family of South African rapper, AKA, has announced the funeral and memorial details for the late musician, whose real name is Kiernan Jarryd Forbes. According to a statement released on his Instagram and Twitter pages on February 14, 2023, the family plans to hold a private provincial funeral for AKA on Saturday, February 18. Prior to that, a memorial service will take place on Friday, February 17, at the Sandton Convention Centre, starting at 3 PM.

The statement expressed the family’s appreciation for the love and support they have received from the nation and beyond, following the tragic loss of AKA. The family acknowledged that AKA was not just loved by them but by the nation, his friends, industry colleagues, media tributes, and the MEGACY, a term used to describe his fans.

The family further stated their desire to celebrate the life of AKA with all those who were impacted by his music. They also recognized the unwavering support of the Mohosanas, their extended family, during this time. However, Bongani Mahosana, a member of the extended family, will be absent from the memorial and funeral to observe cultural protocols.

In addition to AKA, his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane was also killed in the shooting incident that claimed the rapper’s life. A memorial service for Tibz will be held at Sacred Heart College in Observatory, Johannesburg, on February 16, at 5 PM. The family expressed their gratitude for the national outpouring of love and support and welcomed any financial contributions to help them during this difficult time. Tibz will be laid to rest in a private funeral on February 18.

AKA was fatally shot on the evening of Friday, February 10, 2023, in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, while dining with friends at the Wish restaurant. His untimely death has shocked and saddened the South African music industry and fans alike.
