Subsidy removal: Edo govt reduces school days to three

In an effort to alleviate the impact of the removal of petrol subsidy, the Edo State Government has implemented several measures, including a reduction in the number of operational days for public basic and junior secondary schools in the state. Effective from June 13, the schools will now operate for three days a week instead of the usual five.

Ozavize Salami, the Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), made this announcement during a press briefing in Benin City. He revealed that Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday have been designated as the new school days, while Thursdays and Fridays will be observed as non-teaching days. The aim of this decision is to maximize e-learning opportunities and ensure that students cover the necessary curriculum. The altered schedule will be in effect for six weeks before the commencement of the vacation period.

Salami further explained that to accommodate the revised timetable, the learning hours for basic schools throughout the state will be extended by one hour, while junior secondary schools will have an additional two hours. This adjustment aims to ensure that the curriculum requirements are met. The curriculum content originally planned for Thursdays and Fridays will be integrated into the lessons conducted on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

Anthony Okungbowa, the State Head of Service, also addressed the press, assuring that the reduction in office workdays would not hamper productivity and efficiency within the government service. He called upon heads of agencies, ministries, departments, and permanent secretaries to develop suitable work templates that align with the new schedule and ensure uninterrupted delivery of government services.

To support the workforce during this transition, the government has taken steps to minimize transportation challenges. Shuttle buses will be deployed along designated routes, including those connecting the government house and state secretariat. These shuttle services aim to alleviate the stress caused by increased transportation costs for residents. The government has identified eight routes within the city where these buses will be operational, providing a convenient means of transportation for workers and citizens alike.

By implementing these measures, the Edo State Government intends to cushion the effects of petrol subsidy removal on various sectors, particularly education and public services. The focus on maximizing e-learning, extending learning hours, and providing transportation alternatives demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring the continued progress and well-being of its citizens.
