Dr. Umoh Michael did not work for 72 hours – LUTH

The management of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has swiftly responded to and debunked the viral news suggesting that Dr. Umoh, a house officer at the hospital, had been overworked, leading to his unfortunate passing. In an official statement, the management stated that the narrative of a grueling 72-hour non-stop shift was false, aiming to set the record straight and quell misinformation being circulated on social media.

The Association of Resident Doctors at the hospital also joined in debunking the story and expressed concern over the extent of misinformation being spread. LUTH’s management, seeking to provide accurate information, outlined the circumstances surrounding Dr. Umoh’s tragic demise.

Contrary to the rumors, Dr. Umoh passed away on September 17 while attending church with his parents. The management confirmed that he was not on a 72-hour non-stop shift, as falsely reported. The records from the Neurosurgery unit indicated that Dr. Umoh’s last on-call duty was on September 13 and 14, 2023. Moreover, he was not on call on the 15th, 16th, and the day he passed away, the 17th. The management emphasized that he was at home with his parents during these dates.

Further clarification revealed that Dr. Umoh had a total of four on-call days in September 2023. A delegation from LUTH visited the family to express condolences and gather additional details, respecting the family’s wishes to keep certain aspects private.

The management paid tribute to Dr. Umoh, recognizing him as a hardworking, diligent house officer, and a promising young man. They expressed deep condolences and emphasized that he would be greatly missed by friends and colleagues.
