Toddler allegedly killed by dad’s girlfriend who fed her batteries, screw, and acetone
In a tragic turn of events, a young woman, Aleisia Owens, has been accused of fatally poisoning her boyfriend’s 18-month-old daughter, Iris Rita Alfera. The shocking incident unfolded on June 25, 2023, when Iris’ father, Bailey Jacoby, left his New Castle home to run errands. Upon his return, he received a distressing call from Owens, who reported that something was seriously wrong with his daughter.
Upon rushing back home, Jacoby found Iris unresponsive and immediately dialed 911. The toddler was swiftly transported to UPMC Jameson Hospital in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and later airlifted to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Tragically, Iris succumbed to organ failure four days later.
Initially, Owens claimed that the child had suffered a head injury after falling off her bed during a cramp. However, an autopsy revealed a horrifying truth â Iris had ingested various harmful substances, including button-shaped batteries, a metal screw, and “water beads,” months before her untimely death. The autopsy further disclosed fatal levels of acetone, found in nail polish remover, in the toddler’s bloodstream.
Disturbingly, a search of Owens’ phone unveiled a series of alarming internet searches from February to June 2023. She had been researching information on household products that could cause harm to a child, such as water beads, batteries, and nail polish. In addition, Owens had explored topics like “beauty products that are poisonous to kids” and “medications leading to accidental poisoning deaths in children.”

New Castle Police Chief Robert Salem described the findings on Owens’ phone as a “crucial piece of evidence.” Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry expressed deep sorrow, stating, “The details of this case are heartbreaking. It is hard to fathom someone taking deliberate steps to harm a completely helpless child, then misled investigators about what happened.”
Although Jacoby had been living with Owens for about a year, he was not implicated in his daughter’s death. Chief Salem emphasized that there was no evidence linking him or anyone else to the tragic incident. Owens now faces a range of charges, including homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault of a child, and endangering the welfare of a child.
During her appearance in front of Judge Richard A. Russo, Owens remained dry-eyed and expressionless. She has been incarcerated at Lawrence County Jail without bond. Iris’ grieving family expressed relief at Owens’ arrest, acknowledging that the legal process ahead would be lengthy and challenging. Meanwhile, Iris’ mother, Emily Alfera, shared heart-wrenching tributes on social media, struggling to come to terms with the loss of her “beautiful angel baby.”
